There are many people who buy ‘Pain Killers’ as a health related solution for anything. For any ailment like headache or body aches, go straight to the medical store and buy a painkiller. Or you can buy it from what you have bought at home and ‘stocked’.
This can never be considered a good trend. Taking painkillers without a doctor’s prescription can lead to many side effects, big or small. A nephrologist from Gurugram, (New Delhi, India) Dr. Manju Agarwal, shares such a conclusion.
Do you take painkillers regularly?
Dr. Manju Agarwal points out that those who take painkillers regularly without a doctor’s prescription may gradually develop kidney problems. She also says that painkillers do not affect a perfectly healthy person if they eat it occasionally.
‘If you take painkillers regularly for a long time, especially if it is taken in combination with many other drugs, it can seriously impact the kidneys. The elderly, people with diabetes and high blood pressure may experience more challenges than usual. In them, there is a risk of kidney failure later on. Dr. Manju Agarwal clarifies.
Many painkillers are sold in stores without a doctor’s prescription. Drugs such as ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen, aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine are the most commonly sold in these stores. People eat it for issues like headaches and back pain.
Creatinine levels increase as these drugs begin to impact the kidneys. People with early kidney disease are more likely to have this problem. It can also increase the amount of potassium in the body.
In the early stages, the body may not give any significant indication that the drug has affected the kidneys in this way. This is often the case when testing for other reasons. Later, however, symptoms may include shortness of breath, vomiting, loss of appetite, and fluid in various parts of the body.
Avoid using painkillers regularly to avoid all these issues. If you have any kind of needs, it can be done only after consulting your doctor. It is advisable to avoid painkillers completely in the elderly and those suffering from diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure.
